Used batteries drop off

Recycling quiz! Where do used batteries go? LANDFILL/black, RECYCLING/blue, or ORGANICS/green? None of the above! Why? Because used batteries are considered Household Hazardous Waste! They contain heavy metals that can contaminate groundwater. So... where can one take them for safe disposal?

Los Angeles Public Libraries to the rescue! Every branch of @lapubliclibrary has a collection bucket just waiting for your used AAA, AA, C, D, button cell, 9v, (whether single-use or rechargeable). The collection buckets are clearly marked and often located near other services like printers and community bulletin boards. Just ask the friendly librarians if you don’t see it. Make sure you cover the terminals with tape on both ends. Really?? Never heard this? This prevents potential leaks and sparking! According to @calrecycle, batteries are a valuable source of recyclable metals. For more info on HHW via the links in their bio!

HHW must be properly disposed of because they are dangerous if placed in any ordinary waste container: corrosive materials could leak into the container and cause injury if touched; batteries might also start a fire at collection/transfer facilities; and if they end up in the landfill, they decay and leak into the ground below, contaminating the water table/aquifers.

While you’re at the library, dropping off your used batteries, check out some books, ‘zines, films, and community events! The LA Public Library is a vital resource for all Angelenos!
